Three
Estes Park climbers joined the USA Climbing Team at the North
American Continental Championship held in Montreal, Canada, Dec. 5-7.
Invitations
were offered to climbers finishing in the top 10 at the
USA National Sport Climbing Competition in the youth and adult
categories. The North American Continental Championship is held every
two years and rotates venues between the United States, Mexico and
Canada.
This
international competition included both sport (roped) climbing and
speed
climbing with each category including approximately 20 competitors. All
three Estes Park climbers advanced through the qualification and semi
final rounds to the finals. Paige Claassen, reigning
Continental
Champion, finished second overall in the Women's Adult Open Sport
Climbing Division earning a purse of $1,000.
Hunter
Schumaker finished
sixth in the Female Youth B category (14- and 15- year-olds) in Sport
Climbing and fifth place in the Speed Category.
Laurel
Todd finished in
third place in the female Youth C category (12- and 13-year-olds) in
Sport Climbing and qualified for finals in the speed category. Todd was
in a three-way tie for first place after the Finals route, forcing an
exciting Super Final climb-off.
The
U.S. team fielded its largest international climbing team ever
with one hundred and twenty seven athletes competing in six age categories
for the sport and speed climbing disciplines, and they won a total of
sixteen gold, eleven silver and thirteen bronze medals. A record
seventy athletes from the U.S. qualified for the final round of
competition.”
Schumaker
and Todd currently climb on the Estes Park Climbing Team.
Claassen is a former member of the Estes Park Climbing Team and is
currently attending the University of Colorado in Boulder.
