The North Buttress of Hallett Peak in the morning sun on March 17th, 2008

Image

The North Buttress of Hallett Peak was considered one of the most fearsome alpine rock walls in North America when it was first ascended in 1951 via the Hallett Chimney route and in 1956 via the Northcutt-Carter route on the furthest right Third Buttress.  Mixed lines between the buttresses in winter and steep gneiss in the summer shade make this imposing buttress on Hallett a cliff for all seasons.  Climbing pioneers including Yvon Chouinard, Harvey Carter, Duncan Ferguson, Roger Briggs, Malcolm Daly, Layton Kor, John Wharton (Josh Wharton's dad) and Topher Donahue have explored classic passages up this climber-friendly escarpment.
