The Zowie spire on the south face of Otis Peak shines under Colorado blue skies in July of 2009.

Often mistaken for the neighboring Petite Grepon (only one valley to the south), many parties assume (in the dark) that this is the "50 Crowded Classic" until the lack of other climbers and somewhat easier climbing on this striking tusk separate the super popular Petite from this relatively obscure spire in Rocky Mountain National Park.
With a shorter approach, more moderate climbing, and an easier descent- the Zowie is a great warm-up for the Petite or perhaps a better option when the crowds are high or the weather is volatile. For a complete alpine day, consider climbing the neighboring Wham Spire which sits just to the east of the Zowie for a double spire day. Ascents of the Zowie, Wham, Petite, and the Saber would make for the ultimate one-day RMNP spire enchainment and a Grade VI outing. Get up early or get wet!
