The east face of Longs Peak as viewed from the Iron Gates route on Mt. Meeker, Colorado.
The Iron Gates route not only offers fantastic views of the east and south faces of Longs Peak, it is also typically the least avalanche prone and thus safest way to reach Rocky Mountain National Park's second highest peak in the middle of winter. This mostly 2nd class route, has a few steps of mandatory 3rd class terrain to reach the ridgecrest of the east ridge which is the upper half of this route, originating at the Chasm Meadows and Longs Peak trailhead.
Chasm Lake is visible in the lower right corner of this photo as is the Loft at left and most of the east face, the 'Diamond' which is a rock climber's paradise and great training for Patagonia or the Trango Towers in the winter months.
