The summit spire of the Spearhead (12,575') at sunrise in the Glacier Gorge of Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.
The east face of the Spearhead is a 1000' wall of high quality and very featured granite and with a base altitude of 11.5K, the breathing becomes a bit more labored and the brain a bit thick as you start up this alpine wall.
Classic routes of a range of grades cover this wall, including: The North Ridge (6), The Barb (10c), Sykes Sickle(9+), Spear Me the Details (11d), Obviously Four Believers (11a), All Too Obvious (12a), Age Axe (10c) and East Prow (9) are among the best grade III and IV routes of this style in Rocky Mountain National Park.
The bivy camping in the meadows and talus fields below the magnificent east face are some of the most scenic and aesthetic in the Colorado alpine zone and the descent down either east or west faces takes less than an hour and requires no rappelling so the summit can be reached via a 3rd class scramble for those who want to share the same amazing view from the center of the upper Glacier Gorge.
